Hallmarks of Design: Evidence of design in the natural world £6.99
Author(s): Burgess, Stuart

£6.99

Catalogue number: D.4.568
The question of origins is very important because it greatly affects answers to other ultimate questions such as the purpose pf life and what happens after death. Faith in chance evolution logically leads to the belief that there is no God and no life after death. On the other hand, faith in instantaneous creation leads to the belief that there is a God who is in control of the world and our eternal destiny. Considering the implications of origins, it is very important to be aware of the evidence for a Creator rather than just blindly accepting the theory of evolution. This book describes 6 hallmarks of design that can only be produced by an intelligent designer: 1.Irreducible mechanisms 2. Complete optimum design 3. Added beauty 4. Extreme similarity 5. Extreme diversity 6. Man-centered features.

In recent times much has been written about the relationship between science and religion. A rather small fraction of this has dealt specifically with interactions between cosmology and theology. Most books discussing this topic assume the validity of modern cosmology and, as a result propose various modifications to orthodox Christianity. The very few more theologically conservative, creationist works generally have a very narrow focus, being primarily concerned either with disproving big-bang cosmology or with promoting their own particular alternative cosmology.

The purpose of this book is to probe beneath the usual questions of origins, digging deeper into various underlying philosophecal issues and examining also a number of closely related matters. The emphasis will be on the theological presuppositions and implications of modern cosmology on the one hand, and on the other, the significance of the Bible for cosmology.

John Byl is Professor of Mathematics and Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Trinity Western University, Langley, British Columbia, Canada. He has a Ph.D.in Astronomy.

Vikings:Fear and Faith

£16.99
Author(s): Cavill, Paul Catalogue number: A.1.557
Savage and disruptive, the first Viking raiders in Anglo-Saxon England were as unexpected as they were devastating. With the looting of monastaries and cathedrals, Anglo-Saxon society lost not only riches, but also much of its fragile culture. The divided nations were taken unaware by this new theat and a complacent Church was at a loss to deal with the situation.

Yet three hundred years later, the Anglo-Saxons were thriving. Under pressure from the invaders, they united under King Alfred and became stronger, converting many of the viking marauders to their ways. New books replaced the old and learning flourished. Even when fully conquered, they found themselvses protected as part of a Christian empire. King Cnut set about restoring the land savaged by himself and his Viking forefathers, building churches and supporting the life and laws his people had disrupted. How did the English achieve the taming of their barbarian overlords?

Paul Cavill tells the enthralling story of how King Alfred and his successors integrated the newcomers into a settled way of life.
