'Poet and Peasant' and 'Through Peasant Eyes': a literary-cultural approach to the parables in Luke (combined edition) £14.99
Author(s): Bailey Catalogue number: A.1.379
Bailey begins by surveying the development of allegorical, historical-eschatological, aesthetic, and existential methods of interpretation. Though figures like Julicher, Jeremias, Dodd, Jones, and Via have made important advances, Bailey sees the need to go beyond them by combining an examination of the poetic structures of the parables with a better understanding of the Oriental culture that informs the text. Bailey's work within Middle Eastern peasant culture over the last twenty years has helped him in his attempt to determine the cultural assumptions that the teller of the parables must have made about his audience. The same values which underlay the impact of the parables in Christ's time, Bailey suggests, can be discovered today in isolated, peasant communities in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. Because time has made almost no impact in these cultural packets, it is impossible to discern, for example, what it meant 2,000 years ago for a friend to come calling a midnight, or for a son to ask for his inheritance prior to his father's death. In addition to illuminating the cultural framework of the parables, Bailey offers an analysis of their literary structure, treating the parabolic section as a whole as

well as its individual components. Through its combination of

literary and cultural analysis Bailey's study makes a number of

profound advances in parabolic interpretation.

The Discerning Reader: Christian Perspectives on literature and theory £9.99
Author(s): Barratt, Pooley, Ryken (Ed) Catalogue number: J.1.325
If the world is alive with God's glory, the poet and the critic alike are called to recognise it, celebrate it, and interpret it. English studies today, however, are gripped by anxiety over both the content of, and the values implicit in, literary criticism. Has the glory departed? Is literature only play, or does it nurture and transmit a culture, including its moral values? Are literary critics now dependent on the perspectives offered by post-structuralism, feminism or Marxism? The Discerning Reader is a Christian response to the major issues and some key texts encountered by students in English studies. It is concerned with both theory and practice, an indispensable and unique guide for all discerning readers. A marvellous set of essays by lecturers in English in Britain and the USA examining theories about liberation and poetry, then moving on to case studies including Shakespeare, Milton, Romantic poetry, Hardy, Attwood and Pynchon, concluding with an excellent bibliographical survey by David Barnatt of valuable resources in the various literary traditions.

The Last Things: Hope for this world and the next. £12.99
Author(s): Bavinck Catalogue number: A.1.410
On the threshold of the twenty-first century, Western society is obsessed with near-death experiences and questions about life after death. At the same time, the Christian church is challenged by a plethora of sermons, articles, and books on biblical prophecy, Armageddon, the millennium, the rapture, the second coming, and the final judgement. In the midst of this eschatological confusion, the theology of Herman Bavinck has made a timely appearance in English to offer sound exegetical guidance.

'The Last Things' wrestles through Scripture passages on death and the intermediate state, judgement, the identity of Israel, universalism and the final renewal of all things. And, as the editor notes, though published one hundred years ago, this work 'is biblically and confessionally faithful, pastorally sensitive, challenging, and still relevant.'

'The Last Things' was originally the eschatological section of Bavinck's 'Gereformeerde Dogmatiek ' (Reformed Dogmatics). All four volumes of the dogmatic theology will eventually be published.
