Modern Art and the Death of a Culture £12.99
Author(s): Rookmaaker Catalogue number: J.1.316
This disturbing but illuminating classic is a brilliant perspective on the cultural turmoil of the radical sixties and its impact on todays world, especially as reflected in the art of the time. Rookmaaker's enduring analysis looks at modern art in a broad historical, social, and philosophical context, laying bare the despair and nihilism that pervade our era. He also shows the role Christian artists can play in proclaiming the truth through their work. Rookmaaker's brilliant articulation of faith and scholarship is insightful and inspiring. The book moves freely and with a sense of urgency between the worlds of high culture, popular art and music, and Christian faith. Hans Rookmaaker (1922-1977) grew up in the Dutch East Indies. As a young man in wartime Holland, he was interned for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. In the prisoner of war camp he attended lectures on the Christian philosophy of Dooyeweerd - these played a crucial role in his conversion to Christianity. In 1948 a lifelong friendship with Francis Schaeffer began - they frequently lectured together in Britain & throughout the world.

In 1959 Rookmaaker published his doctoral thesis on the artist Gauguin, and in 1965 he was invited to the Chair of Art History at the Free University of Amsterdam. Rookmaaker was also highly respected as a jazz & film critic.

Here are a few recommendations:

'Publication of Rookmaaker's collected writings is a landmark event that is long overdue & much needed. It will go a long way to fill the gap in the art-historical thought of this man, who was one of the most insightful cultural observers & art critics of the twentieth century'

Dr.E.John Walford, Professor of Art History, Wheaton College, Illinois, & author of 'Great Themes in Art'.

'Hans Rookmaaker....one of the few people I have known who have had a defining influence on both my understanding of art & my Christian experience....I was one of the generation of young Christians who were looking for encouragement & vision as we set out on our own creative journey, & Hans Rookmaaker inspired us by his writings, his insight, his humour & his great zest for life'.

Murray Watts, director, playwright, writer & fimmaker.

'Rookmaaker sets the arts in the midst of a rich & full-blooded Christian worldview....It's a wonderful thought that this man's rare wisdom, which so radically changed the lives of those who knew him, can now find its way to a wider audience'.

Dr. Jeremy Begbie, Theology through the Arts Project, Universities of Cambridge & St. Andrews.

Argues that sociology - like every other discipline - cannot avoid philosophical assumptions and that philosophy cannot avoid religious commitments. Therefore Christian sociologists can and should work within a philosophical perspective derived from the Christian faith rather than one derived from a variety of alien Humanist ones.If Christian sociologist fail to do this then they are importing Trojan horses into the Christian camp. The end result is that the various -isms of fragmented secular sociology then proceed to fragment & polarise the Body of Christ. In addition the positive work of authentically Christian sociological analysis is eclipsed....& the light remains under a bushell.
